There are outbreaks of measles and Ebola right now in the DRC.
Measles has killed twice as many people.
The underlying reason for the outbreaks of measles in the DRC and Samoa is the same. Low vaccination rates allow a very contagious and serious disease to take hold and spread. And when that happens, some people die, and many more suffer.
Measles is no more ‘just a rash’ than Ebola. If anyone is saying otherwise they either don’t understand, or are deliberately lying.

Vaccines work. Without them, epidemics of otherwise preventable disease happen. When epidemics happen, people die.
Refusing to vaccinate is a decision that not only puts your own family at risk, it can lead to the suffering of a whole community. When outbreaks occur, it’s often the babies too young to have their own vaccines, or the elderly or frail, who are the ones that pay the ultimate price. But not always — the thing about vaccine preventable diseases is that they are serious, and can cause death and injury and suffering in anyone, no matter how fit or strong they are.
