**Breaking news overnight**![]()
The European Medicines Agency has released a statement based on its analysis of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and has concluded that unusual blood clots with low blood platelets should be listed as a very rare side effect.![]()
The EMA reviewed 169 reported cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in Europe, as of April 4, from 34 million administered doses of the vaccine. The risk of developing clots based on that data is 1 in 200,000 (5 in a million)![]()
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reported that of 20 million people given the AstraZeneca vaccine up to March 31, there were 79 cases of this unusual blood clotting/low platelet syndrome. The risk of blood clots in this population was 1 in 250,000 (4 in a million). ![]()
1. Regulatory authorities in Australia are now considering this data and may make new recommendations based on it ![]()
2. This demonstrates how well the safety data and “post marketing surveillance” is working and how seriously any safety signals are taken. Very rare adverse events can only be picked up once mass use of a medicine is commenced. This is not because anything prior to this stage is rushed, but a part of the normal process of the roll out of any new medicine. Rare events can only be detected after use in millions of people. ![]()
3. This risk of blood clotting is far lower than, for example, that seen with the oral contraceptive pill (although the two types of clotting are different) ![]()
4. Unusual clotting associated with low platelets can also be triggered by a blood thinning agent called heparin (the syndrome is then called HITS) and the suggestion is that this may be a similar immune mediated reaction. Taking aspirin or other blood thinners to try and prevent it is NOT recommended. The management of this kind of blood clotting is very different. ![]()
5. The risk of adverse events from contracting Covid is far higher than any risk from the vaccine (case fatality rates globally are about 2%, or 2 people out of every 100 with the disease will die (or 20,000 in a million). Many many more will go on to be significantly disabled, possibly permanently ![]()
Regulatory bodies across the world are being as transparent as possible, and we wait to see what recommendations the TGA will make in light of this announcement. ![]()
