'Dear ones, For many ignorant years I didn't get a flu shot. Now I know better. These are the flu shot facts distilled into bullet points: You can't get flu from a flu shot, it's impossible. It doesn't protect you against the common cold which can also make you feel miserable but won't kill you It takes up to 14 days to make the antibodies that will recognize the 4 strains of flu you've been immunized against. If you get the actual flu within this 14 days you've caught it before immunization It's not a force field If you do get one of these four strains of influenza, your immune system has the heads up and can mount an immune response much sooner. This means staying at home instead of going to hospital. Or living instead of dying... It doesn't weaken your immune system, it strengthens it It helps protect the more vulnerable members of our community, such as the very young, the elderly, those with chronic health conditions and the immunocompromised The first time you get the flu it can kill you - even if you're fit, healthy, young and have a wonderful north coast lifestyle. Flu shots are given at the start of cold and flu season - people often get sick then and it's normal to correlate illness to an event. It won't give you a flu or cold nor make you susceptible to one. There are other flu strains out there and they mutate all the time - a flu shot is better than nothing at all. Really. Get immunized. It's free for so many people in our society - but if it isn't free for you (check your work place) then fork out the money, it's worth it. ... See MoreSee Less
